LOCAL EVENTS

May is a bustling month for events in and around Westport. Visitors can typically look forward to local music sessions in traditional pubs, like Matt Malloy's, farmers' markets showcasing regional produce and community festivals celebrating everything from food to folklore. 

  • The West of Ireland Women's Mini Marathon (4th May): Held in Castlebar, this event celebrates women in sport. Walkers, joggers and runners are equally welcome to participate. A Mini-Mini fun run of 2km is also held for primery school children.
  • Ballinrobe Races (9th May): Enjoy a full evening of thrilling racing action followed by live music. Gates open @3.05pm with 1st race @5.05pm and last race @8.30pm
  • Darkness Into Light (10th May): An inspiring fundraising event to support mental health, prevent suicide and give the gift of hope to those impacted by suicide. This event will take place on the grounds of Westport House @4.15am.
  • Croagh Patrick Heritage Trail (10th May): A 20km linear walking trail running from Aghagower to the village of Murrisk at the foot of Croagh Patrick, in raising funds for Mayo Roscommon's Children Hospice.
  • Relay for Life (17th May): A 24hr event in aid of the Irish Cancer Society. You can donate to the event, or to your favourite team or to fundraiser. You can also buy a Candle of Hope bag and join the evening ceremony of music and remembrance.
  • The Distinguished Gentleman's Ride (18th May): The World's largest motorcycling charity event in aid of men's mental health and prostate cancer! Prepare to see over 40 classic and vintage styled motorcycle riders draped in their finest best tweed suits and their best cravats down at the Westport Quay @12pm and leaving for Newport @1pm.
  • The Wild Atlantic Ultra (24th May): Taking place in Louisburgh, the WAU is a 50-mile Ultra Marathon and one of the most scenic races in Ireland.
  • Grow Remote Westport (24th May): From zoom to ziplines, join other remote workers @10am at Westport Adventure Park, to share experiences and strenght your local network. 
  • The Clew Bay Garden Trail (24th May): The launch event starts @11am at the National Museum of Ireland in Turlough Park, Castlebar (F23 HY31). It provides the opportunity to explore and learn about the unique gardens along the shores of Clew Bay from May to July.
  • McHale Raceday (26th & 27th May): 2 days racing with the 1st day being the biggest race day featuring the McHale Mayo National with a prize fund of €100,000. Gates open @2.25pm with 1st race @4.25pm and last one @7.30pm
  • Mayo Pride (30th-31st may + 1st June): Back in Westport, this is the 8th annual Mayo Pride, with a full line-up of events scheduled throughout the Bank Holiday Weekend, including the Parade on Saturday 31st starting @1.30pm from The Fairgreen marching all the way down to the Quay for a post- parade party.
