Wine with an Irish Accent

Wine with an Irish Accent

16th & 17th November - Irish wine makers, wine lovers and the wine that has inspired them is the starting point for a fascinating weekend exploring wine.. Award-winning sommelier Nick Faujours has designed a weekend of tastings, masterclasses and dinner based around three fascinating Irish-connected wine stories – those of Sinead and Liam Cabot, Róisín Curley and Simon Tyrell.

The weekend begins on Friday evening with an introduction to tasting with Sinead Cabot in Knockranny’s stylish bar, a simple and straightforward intro to make sure everyone is on the same page before the interesting stuff begins the next day.

On Saturday, there are three masterclasses, one from each of the three wine storytellers, plus a walk-around tasting.

The first class at 3 p.m. will be given by Mayo native, Róisín Curley, a Ballyhaunis-based pharmacist who is also an Irish winemaker and micro-négociant making small-scale wines in Burgundy, one of the most prestigious French wine regions of all. An extraordinary story, Róisín trained in some of France’s finest vineyards, including Château Latour and Château Grillet. Preferring organically-grown fruit, Róisín buys high quality grapes from small parcels grown and cared for by conscientious growers to make traditionally influenced, minimal intervention, elegant wines.

The second class at 4 p.m. is by Simon Tyrell of Tyrrell & Company, set up in 2003 by husband and wife team Simon and Emma Tyrrell, who have forged a reputation as suppliers of high quality, artisan wines from France with a particular focus on the Rhône Valley. Tyrrell & Co supplies the restaurant trade and independent off-licences but Simon has also branched out into wine production himself, producing some sensational wines both in France and in south-eastern Spain.

The third class at 5 p.m. is from Liam & Sinead Cabot, well-known locally as wine merchants based in Westport, distributing a hand- picked range of wines to hotels, restaurants and retailers in Ireland, but, since 2011, also producing interesting and delicious wine from 1.5 hectares of vines in the Stajerska region of eastern Slovenia from three grape varieties – Sipon (Furmint), Laski Riesling and Modra Frankinja (Blaufränkisch).

Each masterclass lasts 45 minutes where each wine maker will showcase some of their older vintages, followed by a final pre-dinner walk-around tasting.

Including a dinner designed to complement these three intriguing wine stories by head chef Seamus Commons on one night in La Fougère, recent winner of Best Hotel Restaurant in Ireland 2018 at the Food & Wine Awards, Wine with an Irish Accent at Knockranny House Hotel is a two-night B&B stay with a wine tasting intro, three masterclasses and a walk-around tasting for €199 per person sharing.
