Westport

Ideally situated on the shores of Clew Bay, Westport’s bewildering array of brightly coloured shops and restaurants jostle for attention along its tree-lined streets. Designated one of Failte Ireland's Heritage Towns, it nestles under the shadow of the imposing Croagh Patrick Mountain and overlooks Clew Bay in County Mayo. One of the few planned towns in Ireland - it was designed in the 18th Century by James Wyatt – it has many outstanding features, most notably the unique boulevard known as The Mall, running parallel to the Carrowbeg River.

Westport performs consistently well in the prestigious National Tidy Town Competition and was delighted to win the overall award again in August 2006. The town's other attractions include the famous Westport House and Country Estate, one of Ireland's top day visitor attractions. This fine Georgian mansion, home of Lord Sligo, is well worth a visit and is open to the public from April to September each year.
